With the crowning of King Charles III representing the first coronation in seventy years, it is perhaps no surprise that many Brits turned to their phones and tablets to make sure they didn’t miss out. As a result, more time was spent on the BBC iPlayer app than any day so far this year.
Viewers aged 55+ accounted for 49% of all time spent on the app on the day of the Coronation, well above the BBC iPlayer average of 40%, while Gen Z (15-24) were also more likely to engage with the event when compared to their regular viewing habits.
Ipsos iris data, endorsed by UKOM , shows that those aged 55+ spent more time on the iPlayer app for the Coronation than they did on the day of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral. This is contrary to an overall fall in engagement compared to the funeral – with a 13% drop in time spent – driven by a large fall in viewers under age 55.
